Consultation has concluded
Following a thorough risk assessment and appropriate planning approval, it has been determined that three trees, identified as extreme risk and posing a significant danger to the community will be removed in the coming weeks.
It is likely that some of these trees have been standing in the park for over one hundred years, and Council wants to further their lifespan by using the harvested timber in a way that provides benefit and meets the expectations our community.
We put the question now to you - our community - How would you like to see the timber used?
Would you like to see made into: Furniture? Park bench seats? Playground equipment? Or maybe public art?
Leave your suggestion below!
Suggestions will be collated and considered by Councillors to make a decision on how this timber will be used.

Notes:
It is likely that the timber will need 4-5 years to dry out and will not be ready for use until after such time.
A long-term strategic plan is being developed to continue replacing the mature trees as required. Community input will be sought on the plan’s development throughout 2024 with more information to come on this.

I live in wangaratta. I think you could work with mens shed and wangaratta woodworkers to build some toys for christopher robin preschool

Involving First Nations people in this process is really important. It would be great if some of the timber could be provided to Bangerang Traditional Owners and Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation for use in traditional crafts. Council could commission a Bangerang artist to produce a set of artefacts for permanent display in the Council offices. A Bangerang artist could be engaged to work on an art project for installation at Merriwa Park e.g. carved totem poles. This could form part of a gathering space for an annual mourning morning on January 26 following the success of this year's event.

Would be great to make a lovely large gazebo/rotonda out of them, there is not enough shelter at Meriwa park.

Getting the trunks carved into something the ratepayers agree on. (Chainsaw artist) but get it done by a local that lives locally, not someone that lives in America and that use to live here!!

More playgrounds are needed please but look into it carefully when choosing like some of the parks on Melbourne are amazing with flying foxes and water play included. Thank you

Benches Could they also be made into chopping boards for the community to buy. Nice memento for people to buy and raise some funds for council. Artwork - history of the park and enviro sustainability angle - perhaps with the rings of the tree stump so people can guess the age etc A bench donated to each of the local schools or at least St Pat’s.

I think in a few locations the wod could be jumping stumps for kids to jump between, one of course being Merriwa Park, and then another park locally

Why not cut them to a certain height then have a chainsaw artist make a sculpture of something we all agree on.

Art installations for sure, those trees have seen a lot. It would be beautiful to see the art reflecting that. Wangaratta totems would be awesome too. Anything art, towns can never have too much beauty.

Using the branches to make nesting hollows for wild birds would be great, or even for micro bats. Also leaving the trunk of the tree intact and getting someone to carve the trunk into artwork would be great. You could use the tree branches to create a small garden area with native shrubs for wild life.

I would like to see a couple of tables and seats with covers in Mitchell ave park between the play ground and the children’s garden. There is only one covered bbq and there can be up to 3 or 4 birthday parties there at the same time. There are also caravans that pull up there for lunch and use the toilets.

If they have to go then let's make use of them. The Kaluna Park trails badly need the existing table and a number of benches replaced. More benches in spots overlooking the water would be appreciated. The wildlife sculptures that crown the wooden posts in Strathdale Park, Bendigo are a wonderful depiction of local fauna. I can share pics but no opportunity to do so here
