We've all felt the effects of increased adverse weather events from climate change recently, from the 19/20 bushfires to flooding and storm damage. These events remind us of how crucial it is to be prepared for what’s ahead.
That is why we are developing a 10-year Climate Adaptation Plan for our municipality.
The plan aims to reduce the vulnerability of Council assets and operations and to prepare our local community to become more resilient to the effects of natural hazards and extreme weather events including storms, flooding, heat stress, drought and bush fires that directly affect residents, infrastructure, businesses and our natural environment.
Council manages a range of assets and services to serve residents, businesses, and the community, which will require adaptation to reduce vulnerability to climate-related natural hazards. These include but are not limited to:
Council-managed buildings
Parks, gardens and open spaces
Roads, bridges, footpaths, drainages and other infrastructure
Waste and recycling
Town planning
Emergency response

Your input matters
We would like to hear your views to help understand how the increased risk of natural hazards will impact the community, and the adaptation actions Council should prioritise. Your feedback will form part of a comprehensive engagement program to gather knowledge, concerns and expectations of the local community, government authorities and other key stakeholders.

Drop-in sessions
The Council will be hosting drop-in sessions if you would like more information or ask some questions to the team developing the Plan. The dates and times for these sessions are as follows:
Moyhu – Monday 19th of August, Moyhu Memorial Hall, 4.30pm - 6.30pm
Wangaratta – Thursday 22nd of August, Council Chambers, 1pm - 3pm

The Rural City of Wangaratta is developing a 10-year Climate Adaptation Plan (CAP) that aims to reduce the vulnerability of Council assets and operations from the impacts of climate change. The Climate Action Plan will prepare our local community to become more resilient to the effects of natural hazards and extreme weather events including storms, flooding, heat stress, drought and bush fires that directly affect residents, infrastructure, businesses and the natural environment.
The Climate Adaptation Plan does not aim to address climate change mitigation or emissions reduction targets. Instead, it will focus on the local impacts of climate change related natural hazards and how Council and the community can adapt to build resilience against these.
