Climate Adaptation Plan

The Rural City of Wangaratta is developing a 10-year Climate Adaptation Plan (CAP) that aims to reduce the vulnerability of Council assets and operations from the impacts of climate change. The Climate Action Plan will prepare our local community to become more resilient to the effects of natural hazards and extreme weather events including storms, flooding, heat stress, drought and bush fires that directly affect residents, infrastructure, businesses and the natural environment. 

The Climate Adaptation Plan does not aim to address climate change mitigation or emissions reduction targets. Instead, it will focus on the local impacts of climate change related natural hazards and how Council and the community can adapt to build resilience against these. 

Council manages a range of assets and services to serve residents, businesses, and the community, which will require adaptation to reduce vulnerability to climate-related natural hazards. These include but are not limited to:

• Council-managed buildings
• Parks, gardens and open spaces
• Roads, bridges, footpaths, drainages and other infrastructure
• Waste and recycling
• Town planning
• Emergency response

We would like to hear your views to help Council understand how the increased risk of natural hazards will impact the community, and the adaptation actions Council should prioritise. 

Your feedback will form part of a comprehensive engagement program to gather knowledge, concerns and expectations of the local community, government authorities and other key stakeholders.
